My mother and husband have both called me a drama queen. So it makes sense that my studio has a cigarette/bourbon bottle shrine to Jackson Pollock and that there's blues music jamming in the background. It's also why intuitive abstract expressionist art is what excites me. To be able to evoke emotion from viewers with something I create from deep within me, is so amazing. These are visuals that I did not know existed until they appear on my canvas. To me, that work is more powerful than work that's representational in nature.
I'm known for the fusion of color and energy. Two important elements to me because I am legally blind, another continuing drama in my life, but we will talk more about that later... I use a variety of acrylics, India ink, cattle markers, paint sticks, graphite, and spray paint. I'm known to fabricate paint brushes from twigs and leaves or take a metal grinder to my canvas. I use play and experimentation, which reveal a point of balance and mystery. I strive to create work with great stopping power that speaks to me in the end. Originally, I'm from the farm country west of Chicago where my love for art and color began. I received a Bachelor of Fine Art degree at the same time my mother moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Santa Fe artist community became a strong influence on me. Artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Janet Lippincott, and Poteet Victory inspired me with their dramatic abstract expressionist work. Later in life I became legally blind which caused me to leave a 21-year career in advertising. Today I live on a small farm outside of Asheville, NC. My daily painting is my creative outlet as well as therapy. My blindness has transformed my work, revealing even more dramatic color, texture and contrast. christyvonderlack.com RECENT EXHIBITIONS 2019 Miya Gallery, Weaverville NC Xanadu Gallery, Scottsdale AZ Asheville Festival of the Arts Weaverville Studio Tour Dogwood Art Festival, Knoxville TN 2018 Miya Gallery, Weaverville NC Silverbird Gallery, Asheville NC Xanadu Gallery, Scottsdale AZ Asheville Festival of the Arts Weaverville Studio Tour 2017 SYNC Gallery, Denver CO Xanadu Gallery, Scottsdale AZ 2016 SYNC Gallery, Denver CO Louisville National Fine Art Show, Center for the Arts, Louisville CO Art Students League Summer Art Market, Denver CO Osmosis Gallery, Niwot CO 2015 Gallery Andrea, Scottsdale AZ Artwork Network, Denver CO SYNC Gallery, Denver CO Downtown Denver Art Festival, Denver CO Art Students League of Denver Art Market, Denver CO Art on the Rockies, Edwards CO Osmosis Gallery, Niwot CO Pearl Street Art Festival, Boulder CO Steamboat Springs, Steamboat Springs CO Boulder Studio Tour, Boulder CO 2014 Boulder Studio Tour BEST OF SHOW — 29th Annual Louisville National Fine Art Show, Center for the Arts, Louisville CO Mile High Art & Jazz Festival, Denver CO Downtown Art Fest, Frisco CO Beaver Creek Art Festival, Avon CO Cheesman Park Art Festival, Denver CO Art Students League Summer Art Market, Denver CO East Boulder County Studio Tour Featured Artist, C.C. These are som of my favorite products that I use in almost every piece: India Ink, Custom patch texture, Golden transparent red oxide, cattle markers, oil bas and graphite. Ever since 1977, I wanted to be an artist, Mrs. Russell's class sealed the deal.
